Tsisia Kiladze It is known that in XIX century was established the new Georgian painting. The first European experience brought in this time through Russia to Georgia was a realistic style and in such a way much loved and widely distributed in Russia realism was infiltrated in Georgian reality. Such academic vision was only an interim temporal step, in the meantime the national form of Georgian Painting was developed. In this period Georgian, and especially, working in Georgia foreign artists, show a keen interest in Georgian ethnography. The Caucasian way of life, shown under an exotic corner, became favorable not only for temporally arrived, but also for continuously living in Georgia artists. Artists which now are acknowledged as an integral part of the Georgian culture, who actively participated in cultural life and brought a considerable contribution to the formation of Georgian painting. One of such artists, working at the end of 19-th and twentieth years of the 20th century, was the German artist Oscar Schmerling. It is possible to say, that as to the manner of painting Schmerling belongs to Russian realistic school, but as to his world-view and spirit he is closely related to the German painting. And not only because he was taught in Germany, this connection is genetic, he was of German taste and can be considered Georgian artist following the German traditions. |
