Tbilisi in 1910-1920ies (Historical Overview of the Cultural Life)

Mzia Chishradze
The cultural life of Tbilisi of 1910-1920s is an important event in the history of Georgian Art. That was the period when many creative unions and circles were established in Tbilisi and they played an important role in cultural life of the city, Caucasian Society of Fine Arts, “Malii Krug” Union, “Georgian Society of Arts”, “Union of Armenian  Artists”, Tbilisi Avant-garde group and many others were among them. In Georgia was created a fruitful environment for the development of modern art, many talented young artists were seacking for the new ways of expression, they were sharing the achievements of European and Russian modernist arts and trying to ground them on Georgian artistic soil.
In the beginning of XX century the Revolution and Bolshevik terror ruined the intensive artistic life of Russia and the biggest part of creative society fled away and found a shelter in the capital city of independent Georgia - Tbilisi. For that time “Tsisperkancelebi” (The Blue Horns) led the cultural life of Georgia. The members of the group would often arrange meetings together with artists, poets, actors in artistic cafes and clubs, where Tbilisi bohemian life reached its culmination. The majority of those cafes were predominantly decorated with wall-paintings. There actors, singers, dancers would give performances, writers and poets would read their works, lecturers gave their presentations… the café leaders arranged discussions, concerts, ballet performances, theatrical and literary evenings, charity campaigns, benefit performances… Artistic cafes in Tbilisi united the audience and performers; there often actions were developing directly around the tables and the audience could actively participate in the performances. The founders and runners of Petersburg artistic cabarets could only dream of such union. One can say that arts synthesis occurred in those artistic cafes: music, theater, dancing, poetry and prose merged with each other and every word about the art novelties was first voiced in these cafes.
